Responsibilities & Services

The Office of the City Attorney is the primary provider of legal services to the city and is responsible for rendering legal interpretations of state and federal laws and city codes to the City Commission, City Manager, and staff.

Donald J. Doody , Town Attorney

Mr. Doody’s practice encompasses the representation of clients in both the private and public sectors. Mr. Doody is Martindale-Hubbell peer review rated AV Preeminent and divides his time between the firm’s Fort Lauderdale and Delray Beach offices.

In his representation of clients in the private sector, Mr. Doody has extensive experience in complicated and sophisticated commercial real estate transactions.  His client base is comprised of commercial developers and investors involved in the acquisition, sale, and development of large scale projects.  His real estate practice also entails the representation of financial institutions actively engaged in financing both commercial and residential projects.  In addition, Mr. Doody represents private clients in matters related to corporate activities and ongoing business ventures, zoning related issues And civil litigation.

Mr. Doody represents numerous municipalities in the South Florida area, a water control district as well as several successful community redevelopment agencies.  Relative to municipalities, in addition to the traditional and customary areas of responsibilities such as drafting legislation, advising both elected officials and staff members as well as attending  public meetings, Mr. Doody has played a pivotal role in beach re-nourishment projects, complex construction projects, and real estate transactions involving the acquisition of large tracts of property associated with redevelopment efforts within the individual municipalities.  Over the course of time, he has as a city attorney successfully defended municipal clients both in federal and state courts involving issues associated with zoning related issues and constitutional issues such as ADA claims, taking claims, the regulation of adult entertainment establishments and employment actions brought against the firm’s governmental clients.  In 2016 Mr. Doody was named Municipal Attorney of the Year and awarded the Paul S. Buchman Award by the Florida Municipal Attorney’s Association.
