On November 29, 2018, at approximately 10:26AM, our officers responded
to the 1100 block of Hillsboro Mile in reference to a report of a construction
worker who had suffered a severed limb. Sgt. Andrew Kirchoff arrived within
minutes and immediately applied a tourniquet and emergency trauma dressing to
the injury. Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue paramedics arrived on scene,
stabilized the victim and transported him to the hospital. It is our
understanding that Sgt. Kirchoff’s prompt action, and application of the
tourniquet significantly contributed to this life saving effort. It is most fortunate
that in this particular incident Sgt. Kirchoff, who is our department’s CPR and
First Aid instructor, was first on scene. Sgt. Kirchoff happens to be
responsible for our acquiring, training and implementation of these lifesaving
tools in our department’s emergency kits. Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue
Unit’s prompt response and emergency assistance is greatly appreciated. OSHA
was contacted and is currently investigating the incident. Our thoughts and
prayers are with the victim and his family!
